Residential is the most direct path in this whole industry from "new on a crew" to "owner of the company." The ladder is short, the entry is open, and the skills are portable. Let's map how to get in and rise.
The roles & ladder
- Field: laborer/apprentice → carpenter/tradesperson → lead carpenter → superintendent (runs the homes).
- Office: estimator/purchasing, project/builder manager, sales/design-center — and the path to builder/owner.
Getting in
- Get on with a homebuilder or a trade (framing is a great start), learn the whole house, and stack credentials.

Going Deeper (Intermediate)
The classic climbs are lead-carpenter → superintendent and into the builder/PM role, plus estimating/purchasing in production building. The short distance from skilled tradesperson to starting your own build/remodel company is residential's defining career advantage.
