Acumatica Construction Edition at a Glance

Acumatica Construction Edition at a Glance

Welcome

Hello, and welcome. This is Super Structures General Contractors — a national general contractor headquartered in Powhatan, Virginia — here to help you and your clients build something that lasts. We're glad you're with us, and we look forward to connecting with you.

Alright, Acumatica Construction Edition at a Glance. Don't let the plain title fool you. Here's the part that actually matters on the job: Acumatica is a modern cloud ERP with a construction edition that puts job cost, AIA-style billing, retainage, compliance, change management, and project management on one database, priced by computing resources rather than by user, which makes it attractive to growing mid-market contractors who want everyone in the system. Learn it well and you'll see what a newer-generation ERP looks like next to the legacy systems.

A design-build firm with 75 people had QuickBooks for accounting, a PM platform for the field, and a payroll service, and three people whose job was partly moving data between them. They chose Acumatica because the per-user pricing of the alternatives would have kept most of the company out of the system. A year later every PM entered commitments and change orders directly, the controller saw them the same day, and the three data-movers were doing other work.

A note before we start: this is a high-level overview, not the training you will need to run the product. What it is

Acumatica is a cloud ERP platform; Acumatica Construction Edition adds construction-specific capability on top of its financials, distribution, and CRM:

Who it fits

Growing mid-market general and specialty contractors, design-build firms, and contractors with other business lines (distribution, service, manufacturing, real estate) who want one ERP across all of them. Firms that value unlimited users, a modern browser-based system, and the ability to customize without heavy consulting.

What it does well, and where it is thin

Strong: one database for financials, projects, and CRM; unlimited users; modern reporting and dashboards; flexible customization; mobile access; and a resource-based pricing model that scales with transactions rather than headcount. Thin: construction depth in some areas (heavy payroll and union complexity, mature field tools, equipment) is younger than the specialists'; many firms still pair it with a dedicated PM platform; and implementation quality depends heavily on the partner you choose.

How it is sold

Subscription priced by resource tier (transaction volume and compute) and licensed modules, not per user, sold and implemented through a partner network. Ask how the tier is measured and what happens when you grow into the next one.

How it connects

A native connector with Procore is well established, plus an open REST API and a marketplace of integrations for estimating, payroll, document management, expense, and field tools. Its own CRM and project management modules reduce the number of integrations some firms need.

What it takes to run it

A capable implementation partner, an internal system owner who will learn the customization tools, clear decisions about which Acumatica modules you use versus which external tools you keep, and training for the PMs who will now enter commitments and change orders themselves.

Going Deeper (Intermediate)

The decision that shapes an Acumatica implementation is how much of the construction edition to use. Some firms run financials and job cost in Acumatica and keep Procore or Autodesk Build for the field, connected by the native integration. Others use Acumatica's own project management to avoid a second platform. Either works; decide based on what your field staff will actually use and what your owners require. The unlimited-user model only pays off if you put the PMs and supers in the system.

The second decision is how much to customize. The low-code tools are a strength, and they are also how a company ends up with screens nobody else can maintain. Set a rule: standard functionality first, configuration second, customization only with a written business case and a named owner.

Advanced / Pro-Level

Pros use the single database to run real-time project profitability dashboards for every PM, with committed cost, cost to date, and projected cost to complete side by side. They automate compliance holds so a sub's invoice cannot be paid without a current insurance certificate and lien waiver. They use the built-in CRM to track owners, architects, and bids in the same system that later holds the job, which closes the loop from pursuit to closeout. And they use generic inquiries to answer the owner's questions in minutes instead of waiting for a report request to work through a consultant.

Practice Challenge

A 60-person specialty contractor wants to replace QuickBooks and is choosing between a construction-only accounting system and Acumatica Construction Edition. What tips the decision, and what should they ask every reference customer? (Answer: if payroll and job cost depth with construction-specific support is the priority and headcount in the system is small, the specialist is a strong fit; if the firm wants PMs and supers in the ERP, has or plans other business lines, and values modern dashboards and an open platform, Acumatica's unlimited-user model and single database tip it; ask every reference how the partner performed after go-live, how much they customized, and what they would do differently in the first ninety days.)

In Practice

The design-build firm with every PM in the ERP sees commitments the day they are made. The firm with three data-movers finds out at month end.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Takeaway: Acumatica is a modern cloud ERP with a construction edition that puts job cost, AIA-style billing, retainage, compliance, change management, and project management on one database, priced by computing resources rather than by user, which makes it attractive to growing mid-market contractors who want everyone in the system.
